When we push people to a point where they have nothing to lose, the rest of the world has everything to lose.

A gripping story of love and betrayal set against a backdrop of political corruption and climate change.

The year is 2035 and Sydney has transformed from a global city to a third world slum. A drought lasting three decades has dried up the water supply and a war with the Middle East has left the western world bankrupt.

Africa, on the other hand, has flourished, with increased rainfall turning it into the world’s food bowl. Smaller African states have united into a powerful new nation called New Africa. Muslim in both faith and culture, New Africa has replaced the US as the world’s major political force.

Melissa and Olivia are best friends and live in Sydney’s poor Inner West with their families. With unemployment, illness and sexual infidelity taking toll on their lives, the two struggle to maintain their friendship in the midst of betrayal and heartache. As the cracks appear in their family structure they meet Amadi, a middle class Muslim woman from New Africa. Amadi has come to Australia for respite from the emotional struggle with her crumbling marriage and despite the fact that she is from a different culture the three women find a bond which brings them together. This bond is the need to protect the ones they love.

Raindance explores the future of Western society if present day issues are left unaddressed. It is an alarming reality check of what we will be left with;

  • After we allow our environment to be raped beyond repair
  • After we allow our workplace conditions to be eroded away
  • After we allow Globalisation to strip us of our rights as individuals
  • After we allow religion and power to become indistinguishable
  • After we allow greed to replace compassion as millions die in poverty
  • After we allow today to turn into tomorrow and we ignore all the warning signs

Drought is inevitable if we continue to rape the land. The Earth is our Mother and she births everything for us. Raindance is a timely reminder of what can result from our failure to honour and respect the land we inhabit.

Elder Maxwell Dulumunmun Harrison, of the Yuin Nation
